Villa M

A villa for a family with both local and international roots searching to set the feet on the ground in Ouagadougou where they have spent important moments of their lives. This bioclimatic design, both humble and contemporary, combines locally resourced materials, traditional techniques with materials inherited from 20th century minimalism. An important accent is put on the nature within generous garden.

The Villa sets a counterpoint to a tendency to seal off the entire plot. Nested to southern edges of the plot, , the project creates an impression of infinite garden and various discrete shadow zones within the building volume. The major story of the garden is the vádí, a seasonal water bed, an ondulation facilitating the drainage of the abundant seasonal rains.

Cozy, discrete and reasonable, the building´s design emphasizes the positive approach of clients towards environment, towards regenerative, innovative and respectful, yet comfortable architecture. Its thick earthern walls, the integration of vegetation and the choice of local material called BTC (brique de terre compressée = compressed earth bricks) guaranteed no need for air conditioning. Even, the wall of double width keeps the temperature in the central modul 15degrees lower than in exterior.

Experimented within the Maison K the self-locking earth blocks combined with compression slab were used for the integrality of building slabs.
